Ingredients

  • Half a large or 1 small very ripe banana
  • 1 cup milk (or dairy substitute)
  • 2 cups fresh baby spinach
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • A few ice cubes

Equipment

  • Blender

Method

Prep Your Banana
  1. If you're using a fresh banana, peel and slice it into a few chunks. If you've planned ahead and frozen your bananas, grab those pre-frozen chunks straight from the freezer. Using frozen bananas helps achieve a colder, creamier smoothie texture.
Load the Blender
  1. For optimal blending, I always recommend adding your liquids first. Pour the milk into your blender. Then, add the banana, followed by the fresh spinach, Greek yogurt, that essential tiny squeeze of lemon juice, and finally, a few ice cubes on top. This layering helps the blades catch everything efficiently.
Blend Until Smooth
  1. Secure the lid on your blender. Start blending on a low speed to incorporate the ingredients, then gradually increase to high. Watch as the ingredients transform into a vibrant green, listen for the smooth hum of the blender, and continue to blend until the mixture is completely creamy and smooth, with absolutely no visible flecks of spinach remaining. You might need to scrape down the sides with a spatula once or twice. Blend for approximately 30-60 seconds, or until your desired consistency is achieved.

Notes

Smoothies are best enjoyed right after making. To prep ahead, freeze peeled and sliced bananas for up to 6 months, and pre-portion fresh spinach into freezer bags. Keep dry mix-ins easily accessible. Consider adding nut butter, flaxseed, or avocado for extra satiety and creaminess.
